Today in History: Diary of a Today in History

US Merchant Ships seen in World War I
The month of August reveals a lot of history for the foundation of World War I, as countries in Europe begin to erupt in war. Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, officially declared the neutrality of United States in World War I on this day in 1914. Wilson's initial goal for the U.S. was to be "impartial in thought as well as in action," however, after Germany attempts to blockade the British Isle, tension grew between the United States and Germany. Many U.S. ships that traveled to Britain, America's greatest trade partner, were blown up by German mines. Shortly later, in February 1915, Germany announced warfare against any ship, neutral or otherwise, that entered the war zone they have created on the Isle.   In April 1917, America decided to go to war against Germany after more of U.S merchant ships were sunk by German ships.

An image of Anne Frank
The Holocaust was a terrible time where over six million Jews were killed during World War II, though it produced the striking story of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany to a Jewish family. Her family was forced into hiding, as Nazis in Germany were against Jews. During this period, Frank continued to write in her diary she received on her 13th birthday. Why am I talking about Anne Frank if I'm writing a Today in History? The answer is simple, on the morning of August 4th, 1944, the Achterhuis, or the Anne Frank House, was stormed by German police, arresting The Franks along with the van Pels and Fritz Pfeffer, who were hiding with the four members of the Frank family. Sadly, Anne Frank died in early March the next year of 1945 of typhus in a concentration camp, however her diary was published in 1947, gaining international fame and allowing others to see life during the Holocaust.

Talladega Nights

Staring in the comedies, Zoolander, Elf, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Will Farrell is definitely a funny man. Farrell is not just an actor, but also a writer. Today in history, the 2006 movie, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby was released, staring and written by Will Ferrell. It's awesome for me as a car-lover to learn that all the racing scenes were shot with on a Porsche Cayenne with cameras mounted on all four sides of it. It's definitely a fun movie to pick up and watch for an (older) family night with all the crude humor. Just as a note, I wanted to eat Applebee's after watching this movie!

Also just want to note that this day 20 years ago was the infamous Nolan Ryan-Robin Ventura headlock/fight after Ryan hits Ventura with a pitch. Check out the footage below:
