My Relationship with Disney's Frozen (Review)

Frozen, the latest animated Disney-princess film, came to theaters on November 27th, 2013
(Thanksgiving Week), but truthfully, I did not see Frozen until Christmas! I finally decided to write a review after A) finding out that many people still haven't watched it B) watching it a second time and falling in love all over again, and C) because I thought this blog was due for another review of some sort!

This review will be slightly unorthodox. I highly recommend skipping the summary section if you do not want to know the ultimate spoilers. Generally, the movie is about two sisters, Anna and Esla, who grow up as two seemingly isolated princess' trying to find their paths.

The movie begins with Anna, the younger sister, pouncing on her older sister, Elsa, in the middle of the night vying for a midnight play session. Elsa agrees and runs into a grand ballroom with Anna. It is revealed that Elsa has magical snow/ice making powers. While playing among the snow, Elsa accidentally hits an ice shard into Anna's head, bringing Anna into a coma. Esla and Anna's parents run into the room, immediately taking Anna to a group of trolls, who reveals that Esla's power is both a curse and a blessing triggered by fear. The trolls revive Anna, but warn Esla that if she harms her sister's heart, there will be no way to revive her.

The fear that the trolls mention drives Elsa into a prolonged isolation, where their palace gates are closed and even her own sister is isolated. For years, Anna vies for Elsa's attention, but does not get it. When their parents die in a tragic boating accident and Elsa comes of age, the gates were finally forced to open after years of isolation.

The adventurous Anna explores their kingdom of Arendelle and meets one of the guest of Elsa's coronation, Hans of Weselton. They fall in love instantaneously and venture off around Arendelle until the coronation.  Hans proposes to Anna, who happily accepts.

Anna and Hans asks Elsa for their hands in marriage, but Elsa rejects. Angered by this, Anna demands to know why Elsa doesn't allow "true love," but instead startles Elsa and her fear. Elsa runs off into the mountains and casts an eternal winter on her kingdom. Anna runs off to find Esla while Hans takes over the kingdom temporarily.

Anna travels through the harsh winter conditions to find Elsa. Along the way, she encounters Kristoff and his reindeer, Sven, and Elsa's childhood snowman, Olaf. Together, the travel up the North Mountain, where Elsa was thought to be. After days of travel, they find Elsa's snow palace that the had built. Anna offers Elsa to return and unfreeze Arendelle, but Elsa does not know how. Elsa becomes agitated by Anna's constant pleading that she accidentally strikes Anna's heart. Kristoff takes Anna to his family, who is revealed to be the trolls. The trolls explain that only an act of true love would undo the curse. Therefore, Kristoff and Sven run Anna back to Arendelle to get a "true love's kiss" from Hans.

Meanwhile, Hans has summoned a search group to find Anna and Elsa. They found and captured Elsa quickly and return back to Arendelle. Elsa is placed in a cold prison.

When Anna returns to Arendelle, she implores Hans for a kiss, but Hans only leaves Anna to die because he reveals that he wants to take over the kingdom. He tries Elsa of treason for Anna's "death" so solidify this fact. When retrieving Elsa, Hans realizes that Elsa had escaped the prison and caused a raging blizzard in the storm. He runs after Elsa telling her that her actions are what killed Anna. Her despair stops the storm. Meanwhile, Olaf finds Anna left for dead and takes her to Kristoff, who Olaf reveals to be in love with Anna. In the clear fjord, Anna almost reaches Kristoff, but instead runs to Elsa, who is almost murdered by Hans. Anna throws herself between Hans and Elsa be for Elsa is killed, but turns into a solid ice block.

Anna suddenly thaws, forcing Olaf to realize that this was the act of true love that undos the curse. Elsa's calm peace at mind allows her to thaw Arendelle and control her powers and help Olaf survive the blazing heat of summer. Arendelle cuts its ties with Weselton, kicking Hans and his family out. Anna and Kristoff share a kiss and Elsa and Anna promise that the castle gates will never be shut again.

I love this movie so much! Even though I love this movie so much now (I bought the whole album!), it wasn't always so. When I first watched the movie, I criticized the music for being a mix between Hercules and Tangled music. Also, I didn't feel "obsessed" with the movie until watching it a second time.

Frozen surprisingly has a lot of subtle symbolism. Olaf, the happy snowman, is created from Elsa's joy and happiness, while Marshmallow, the monstrous snowman spawned to protect Elsa's kingdom, is a creation from Elsa's fear. Doors also seem to be "gateway" symbolism in the movie. Anna and Hans song, "Love is an Open Door" represents the discovery and curiosity that the young couple experiences, while in "Let It Go," Elsa closes the doors, seemingly closing her mind from the open world. The phrase "closing/opening that gates" is also frequently used for Elsa and Anna's castle, which correlate to the mood of Arendelle.

Frozen is truly a special movie in my heart. It's different than the rest of Disney movies because it shows a true struggle that one can relate to without the overshadowing subplot of love. The movie is kept simple and concise with a focused plot. I seem to fall in love with every character (until the end). What I think intrigues everyone is the soundtrack. Each song itself tells a story, like how "Do You Want to Build A Snowman" transitions from Anna and Elsa's childhood to maturity.

Why is everyone obsessed with it though? To be honest, I can't say so myself, but I can guess, hypothesize and give my opinion. There's a special spark of magic when I watch it. It brings me back into being a kid and falling in love with every movie that I watched. From what I've read on the internet, many people love Frozen for being very relatable (to Esla's and Anna's character). I love it for its simplicity and quirkiness.

What gives Frozen its true "replay ability" is its soundtrack. Like mentioned earlier, the songs seem to tell the story on its own. Every time I listen to the album in order, I always feel like I am watching the movie all over again. Also, the endless number of parodies, remakes, and covers of Let It Go and Do You Want to Build a Snowman never seek to amaze me. Applaud or Veto? 

Given the fact that I wanted to base this movie off my obsession of it, its a definite applaud. Its cheesy in the eyes of some for being a animated Disney movie, but in my opinion, it was better than Tangled, and one of my favorite Disney movies. In a few months (after all the awards are finished), Frozen's trend might die, but if you haven't watched it, you should to see what the craze is about! The craze has slowly died on me, but watching the videos of it makes me fall in love with it again!

For those who know me, get ready for a movie marathon with Frozen being on the playlist!

The Silver Linings Playbook Review

Since the flight from SFO to Hong Kong was a near fourteen hour flight, I decided to spend one-seventh of the flight watching The Silver Linings Playbook starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. This review is considerably late, especially to the time The Silver Linings Playbook came out (November 16, 2012), but many people still do not know too much about this movie, even after its
activity in the Academy Awards.

The movie started, in my opinion, odd. There was very little background on what was going on. When we see Pat (Cooper) he is receiving his pills from a nurse at the mental facility he is in, he secretly is spitting them out as he walks away. Pat is released from the facility as long as he resides with his parents Delores (Jacki Weaver) and Pat Sr. (Robert De Niro). Returning home, Pat realizes that his father is illegally bookmarking to start a restaurant after losing his job. Pat also realizes that his wife, Nikki, had obtained a restraining order against him and moved out of town. To put his life back on track, Pat starts a "silver linings" plan not only to get Nikki back, but also control his bipolar personality.

At a trip to the court mandated therapist, it is revealed that Pat has bipolar disorder and he discusses his rage to Dr. Patel (Anupam Kher). When entering the office, Pat freaks out in the lobby after hearing a song. He reveals to Dr. Patel that listening to "My Cherie Amour" by Stevie Wonder enrages him because it was his wedding song and the song that was playing the day he found Nikki having an affair with another man in the shower. At that moment, Pat nearly beats the man to death and is the reason he was in the mental facility to detain and treat his bipolar disorder. Pat describes the plan he wishes to reconcile with Nikki to Dr. Patel, unknowing that he will be starting his plan when he meets his friend Ronnie (John Ortiz) for dinner.

Pat arrives to Ronnie's house with a Philadelphia Eagles jersey, which does not impress Ronnie's wife. At the dinner, he meets Tiffany Maxwell, Ronnie's sister-in-law. Strangely, the two bond due to their shared neuroses. Abruptly, Tiffany leaves and request that Pat walks her home. As they walk, Pat realizes that Tiffany can deliver a letter to Nikki. Tiffany accepts, but only under the condition that Pat was to partner with her in an upcoming dance competition. Pat accepts, thinking that participating in this completion would further push himself to reconcile with Nikki. During one of their dance practices, Tiffany gives pat a typed up reply from Nikki. Things are going well until Pat Sr. asks his son to go to an Eagles game that conflicts with Pat Jr.'s training schedule.

Pat Jr. goes to the game, skipping out on practice with Tiffany. At the game, Pat sees Dr. Patel and and that Tiffany and Pat Jr. will receive at least a 5 out of 10 on their dance competition. Pat Jr. backs out of the competition with these conditions, but is persuaded when Tiffany tricks him to thinking that Nikki will be there. After isolating himself from everyone else, Pat Jr. realizes the letter was typed by Tiffany with the identical phrase "reading the signs."
seems to have an amazing time until he meets a group of thugs that made racist remarks toward Dr. Patel and his Indian group. Enraged, Pat gets into a fight with these thugs and is detained by the police. Pat Sr. is at home enraged because the Eagles lost and that Pat is spending too much time with Tiffany, who he thinks is unlucky. Tiffany storms into the Solitano household, lecturing that every time Pat Jr. spent time with her, Philadelphia sports teams would win. She points out that this is how she "reads the signs" and sparks Pat Sr. to make a parlay with his gambling partner. Convinced that Tiffany was good luck, Pat Sr. bets that the Eagles will win their game against the Dallas Cowboys,

At the competition, Tiffany is horrified to find that Nikki is in attendance and decides to go to the bar and drink. Pat Jr. finds the drunken Tiffany moments before they must perform. During their routine, a special move that they have prepared goes wrong when Tiffany gets stuck onto Pat for too long. Through the odd performance, Pat's parents await their score, as the Eagles had beaten the Cowboys that night. Adrenaline pumps though their bloods when the first three of four judges reveal their scores to be sub-five, however the final judge gave them a 5.4, just enough for a perfect 5 score.

Shortly, Pat seeks Nikki from the crowd and whispers into her ear. As Tiffany sees this and storms off, Pat runs off to seek her, but he is already too late. Pat finds Tiffany on the street and tells her that he knew she forged the letter, but also reveals that he loves her. In the final scenes of the movie, Pat and Tiffany become a couple while Pat Sr. opens his restaurant with the parlay money he has won

Wow! That was a summary! I really try to limit the length of the summaries but sometimes I just can't help it. Enough of my rambling, I think it's time for my review!

I was skeptical about this movie at first. I am a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan and found a lack-of-Jennifer-Lawrence for the beginning of the film. I tried not to use this point to derail this movie too much though. Still a little doubtful with the lack of Jennifer Lawrence, my opinions started to change as the movie progressed. I was confused at the beginning because of the lack of information, but personally, I like these type of movies because it makes me want to put the puzzle pieces together.

Overall, I thought the movie was magnificent. The movie itself doesn't come on as a large-scale production like Les Miserables, but is a good "feel good" movie to watch whenever you're free. Though the plot does not particularly stand out to me, the acting was what stood out to me. I may be biased because of my love for Jennifer Lawrence, but her performance alone does not account for the overall performance of the cast. Cooper and De Niro's performances particularly stood out to me outside of Lawrence's. Interestingly enough, the Silver Linings Playbook gave me a sense of wonder, anticipation, and laughter.

Applaud or Veto?

Not only is the Silver Linings Playbook have a 92% "certified fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but also a 9/10 in my book. I definitely encourage anyone to watch this movie on a casual movie night. It's not a family type movie (as it is rated R), but a nice young adult or couples movie. It's one of the nicer, quality films that I have seen lately that have really engaged me into it. 

Despicable Me 2 Review!

It's time. It's here. 

Bubbles. It makes me happy. Bubbles while watching Despicable Me 2: AMAZING. Well, really, there wasn't any bubbles in the theater, but watching the movie in RealD made me feel like it did. I watched Despicable Me 2 on Wednesday, July 2nd, the day it premiered, but this review is posted on the weekend because I traveled to Hong Kong (yayy!). Enough with this random nonsense, its time for the review!

Unlike some of my other reviews, I'm going to just give a quick, yet informational summary.

Much of the basic, earlier plot of the movie is explained in the trailer. Though initially Gru was back in the business to go undercover to find the mutating chemical, PX-41, he ends up trying to find out if Eduardo Perez, owner of Salsa & Salsa, is really El Macho, a former villain that was said to have died when he hurled into an erupting volcano strapped to dynamite and a shark. As this mission also starts, a new mission to find out what is happening to the minions, as many were disappearing and mutating into crazy, purple indestructible balls of terror.  Gru doesn't only face hero-villain like troubles, he also faces personal and family problems like falling in love with Lucy, his partner-in-crime, Margo falling for boys, and Agnes' trouble with a Mother's Day speech.

The plot and much of the multiple subplots connect together at the end, including Agnes finally confidentially giving a Mother's Day speech at Gru and Lucy's wedding. Also this is extra filling sentence for anyone who does not was to know the big spoiler at the end. Though most movies end with everything coming together and making sense, I loved how Despicable Me 2 incorporated them into each other and still made it flow very well.

This was definitely a movie that I enjoyed a lot. The purple mutated minions legitimately scared me because when they jump out of the flat screen, you can't help but wonder if the hundreds of them will eat you...

But then again....I learned to never mess with Agnes and her unicorn.....

As I watched the movie, I noticed differences from the first film. With much of character development already established in the first movie, it was not a heavy factor in the sequel. However, you still find newly introduced characters like Lucy and  and original members like Gru, Margo, and even Dr. Nefario, continue to develop even further. Instead on focusing on much of character development, there were many goofy gaffes throughout the film that all seemed to involve the minions. I enjoyed watching these gaffes, as they were quite random, but enjoyable and what makes this movie the blockbuster that it is.

It's true!

Though I throughly enjoyed the movie, I did not like the structure of the plot very much. The beginning of the movie was very random, but an understandable addition to add more gaffes. Throughout the entire movie, I felt like there were multiple subplots that would be interrupted and reiterated at different times of the movie, a little bit like ASDFmovies on Youtube. I can't complain too much about this structure though, because in the end, I understood each one and it all connected very well to end the movie.

Applaud or Veto?

I feel like my movie reviews are getting quite predictable, but an applaud from me! It's a cute, goofy family movie that can take your mind off the pressures of life. It's a pretty random movie, but I put it on my "must watch again" list because of a) the minions, b) I loved the first Despicable Me and I loved this, and c) the joy and laughter it brought me for an hour and thirty-eight minutes.

Monsters University Review!

Pixar brings Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan back in Monsters University (MU), but it's not the new happy Monsters Inc., they bring us back to the basics where the duo learn their scaring! I just watched Monsters University yesterday (Sunday, June 30th), and the movie is still fresh in my mind!

Since Monsters University is still a very new movie that is in theaters worldwide, I'll try to keep most of the spoilers to a minimum (unlike my Les Miserables review). However, I will have a quite lengthy summary anyway.

Before the movie even starts, there is an adorable six-minute animated clip about a blue umbrella falling in love with a red umbrella. At first you see the blue umbrella happily blocking its owner from the heavy storm in a crowd of unhappy grey umbrellas. Soon, you find another happy umbrella approach it, a red feminine umbrella. You feel the romance between these two umbrellas as they walk down the road. However, the two umbrellas take a separate turn. Desperately wanting to be with the red umbrella, the blue umbrella breaks away from its owner and flies to the red umbrella. The blue umbrella falls slightly short of the red umbrella and falls to the wet road tattered and nearly destroyed. After a cut to black, the blue umbrella's owner sees his broken umbrella and picks it up. Aiding the blue umbrella's owner is the owner of the red umbrella. We see the two talking and  having a good time at a nearby cafe, where the blue and red umbrellas are joined together, happily ever after.

Then the movie really begins, as we see a school bus full of young, exited monsters. As they leave the bus, one monster kid seems to be missing, Mike Wazowski. After Mike is found still stuck in the car, we find out that the class is going on a field trip to the famous, Monsters Inc. When partnering up, Mike doesn't have a partner and is left to partner with the teacher. Inside Monsters Inc., the class meets a scarer, Frank McCay. Frank heads into the floor to demonstrate scaring, with the class standing behind a safety line. As Frank heads into his door, Mike crosses the line and walks into the door into the human world. When Frank is done scaring his child and comes back into the monster world, he realizes Mike was in there with him. After scolding Mike of the dangers in the human world, Frank praises Mike of how quiet he was inside the door and gives him his Monsters University hat. Mike is inspired by Frank and wants to pursue his career in scaring.

Years later, we see Mike enrolled in Monsters University in a scare major. He meets roommate Randall Boggs, who is a geeky monsters who desires to be popular. On the first day of class, Dean Hardscrabble drops in to inform the students that those who do not pass the scaring final will be kicked out of the scare program. Mike studies very hard, making sure that he will pass the scare final. One day while Mike was in his room studying, a blue, arrogant monster that Mike saw in class breaks through his window. The monster was James P. "Sulley" Sullivan, who was revealed to be in the famous scaring Sullivan family. Sulley was trying to smuggle a pig from a rival college to prove his worthiness of MU's most elite fraternity, Roar Omega Roar.  When the pig steals Mike's treasured MU hat, Mike also joins Sulley in capturing the pig. As the two near a fraternity party outside, Mike throws a football to capture the pig in a trashcan. Sulley is invited into the fraternity, while Mike, who wishes to join, is denied because he is considered "not scary enough."

Finally, on the day of the finals, Mike continues to study as he waits for his turn in the scaring final. Mike and Sulley begin to fight, they knock over Dean Hardscrabble's prized record-breaking-bottle of scream. Dean Hardscrabble takes the accident very lightly, but questions Mike and Sulley on what type of scare to use. Mike answers the question correctly, but is kicked out of the scaring major because he is "not scary enough." Sulley does not answer a question at all, simply roaring to attempt to impress Hardscrabble. Sulley is also kicked out of the major because he does not understand the different types of scaring used on children.

Angered by his new major, Mike joins the Scare Games, which the winner would be known as the best scarers on campus. With a very soft and not-very-scary fraternity, Oozma Kappa, the entire schools laughs at them. Mike wagers with Dean Hardscrabble that if Oozma Kappa won the Scare Games, that all the monsters in the fraternity will return to the scaring major. Hardscrabble accepts, however, Oozma Kappa only had five contestants, one short of the required amount for the game. Sulley volunteers to join Oozma Kappa, allowing Oozma Kappa in the games.

I will not explain any further because a) this summary is getting very long and b)this is a major story line of the plot. This was simply a "preview"or a "reminder" of what happens in the movie.

As a big fan of the first Monsters Inc. movie, I've got to say, this prequel of the original movie was amazing. I found myself paying attention to the music a lot in this movie because it was very similar to the soundtrack in the first movie. Though the music was very similar, music in MU added a college-like ensemble that gave it a college vibe.

The plot of this movie was much more complex than I expected, as when I thought it was the climax of one problem, a new problem arose. Interestingly, I was actually startled at some points of the movie, such as moments where Dean Hardscrabble was introduced or when scares were taking place. This may have been because of my huge excitement for this movie. Being a prequel, I also looked at many hints or information that may help character development for the original Monsters Inc. Randal's grudge at Sulley is slightly explained and characters from the first movie also make a cameo.

Applaud or Veto? 

Definitely an applaud for me! If you are a fan of the first movie, this is definitely a movie on top of your list for the next coming weeks (for me, Despicable Me 2 is also on the top!). I thought the plot of the movie was also structured very well, as the events flowed one after another. Watching the movie also gave me a lot of childhood memories, and writing this blog made me realize how fast time goes by! Fun little fact: the original Monsters Inc. came out 12 years ago in 2001!

2013 is another big year for the film industry, as big blockbusters like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire are huge attention grabbers, but between these large action-packed films, it feels amazing to relive childhood and catch a fun cartoon like Despicable Me 2 or Monsters University.

Les Misérables Review

Les Misérables is perhaps my most favorite film I have ever seen (probably a spoiler to my applaud or veto section). The summary is very, very, long, so if you like to skip to the review, that is alright.

~SPOILERS ALERT! (this is a summary of the whole movie!)~

Les Misérable is a musical based on French author, Victor Hugo's, historical novel. All dialogue in this film is sung, except occasional speech. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe oppose each other in this epic story of forgiveness, love, and betrayal.

In 1815, prison guard Javert (Crowe) releases convict Jean Valjean (Jackman) on parole after a nineteen year sentence for stealing bread and attempting to escape. Valjean faces adversity after returning to society, as his paroled status excludes him from every town. The Bishop of Digne (Colm Wilkinson) is the only one who offers Valjean food and shelter, however, Valjean attempts to steal his silverware and flee into the night. Authorities catch him as he flees and brings him back to the Bishop. Surprisingly, the Bishop does not punish Valjean, as he explains to the authorities that the silverware was given to him as a gift and gives Valjean even more. The Bishop's action touch Valjean, leading him to break his parole and start a new, honest life.

In 1823, eight years later, Valjean becomes a factory owner and mayor of the town Montreuil-sur-Mer. One day in his factory, Fantine (Anne Hathaway) is dismissed when one foreman discovers that she is sending money to her daughter, Cosette (Isabelle Allen). To continue to support Cosette, Fantine desperately sells her teeth and hair, and becomes a prostitute. Continue to struggle for money, she is arrested by Javert while attacking a hostile customer. Valjean reliefs Fantine and brings her to a hospital.

Later, Valjean learns that a man accused of being him is caught, but reveals his true identity to the court because an innocent man is accused. Valjean runs to Fantine, where he vows to the dying Fantine that he will look after Cosette. Valjean runs into a river to escape Javert, who arrives to arrest him. Valjean flees to the Thénardiers (Helena Carter and Sacha Cohen) household where Cosette lives as a servant. Cosette escapes out of town with Valjean after he buys her from the Thénardiers.

Nine years later, in 1832, many young, revolutionary students (Friends of the ABC) rise in revolt against the French monarchy when General Jean Maximilien Lamarque,  the only official who cares for the lower class, nears his death. One leader of the Friends of the ABC, Marius (Eddie Redmayne), catches a glimpse of Cosette, who grows into a beautiful young woman and falls in love with her. At home, Cosette wishes to learn more about her mother and Valjean's past, but he refuses. Cosette runs out into the garden, where Marius stands at the gate seeking her. Marius professes his love to Cosette.
Éponine, Marius' friend and daughter of the Thénardiers, sadly realizes her secret lover, Marius, loves Cosette more than he will ever love herself. She does however, join Marius in the revolution.

The Thénardiers attempt to catch Valjean for ransoms to Javert, however, Éponine screams to warn them. Valjean realizes that he must flee, unknowledgeable that Marius loves Cosette. Marius sends a farewell letter to Cosette as she and her father flee.

The next day, the Friends of the ABC rise in revolt, clearing a street and building a barricade. Javert attempts to penetrate their forces by posing a rebel, however, is exposed by Gavroche (Daniel Huttlestone),a young boy in the revolution. During one gun battle, Éponine saves Marius by sacrificing her own life. As Valjean receives the love letter sent by Marius, he returns to aid in the revolution. Gavroche recognizes him, and Valjean is allowed to execute Javert. Valjean instead chooses to spare his life and fakes a pistol shot at the wall to convince the students that he had killed Javert.

After a long battle, everyone in the Friends of ABC is killed except Marius, who survives because Valjean drags his unconscious body into the sewers. The Thénardiers, scavenging the sewers, steals Marius' ring, assuming that he was dead. After Valjean carries Marius out of the sewer, he confronts Javert waiting at the exit. Vajean begs Javert to spare him one hour to save Marius, but Javert refuses at first. Valjean leaves to save Marius anyway, while Javert is left with an empty heart indecisive of what to do. Javert, caught up in what is civilly right and what is morally right, jumps to his death of a bridge into the Seine.

Later we see that Marius is healthy and is comforted by Cosette, but still mourning the loss of his friends. Valjean reveals his true identity to Marius, telling Marius that he must leave because his presence will endanger Cosette. Marius accepts and promises that he will not tell Valjean's truth to Cosette. The Thénardiers crash Marius and Cosette's wedding. Marius realizes that the Thénardiers stole his ring, and demands them to tell him the location of Valjean. He and Cosette set off to look for Valjean after knowing the location told by the Thénardiers. Marius and Cosette catch Valjean sitting in a nearby convent, where he is dying and sees Fantine's spirit arriving to taking him to heaven. As Cosette and Marius say their final farewells, Valjean hands Cosette his confessions of the past that he has hid from her for all her life. Valjean then joins the spirits of those who have all died in a new, bright heaven.

Applaud or Veto? 

This is a definite applaud from me! It was an emotional movie that does not only tell a story, but contains so much symbolism, that I can write a whole essay about. Makeup and costume contribute to this movie's success, as it very much enhances the mood and little details that make this movie great. When I first watched it, it felt very long and I was unaware that the movie was all in musical, but it turned out that I did not hate it. In fact, Les Misérables would not be the same without it! This is definitely a movie pouring with emotion and action that is worth watching. There are some moments that seem to make you scratch your head, but is a wonderful movie no doubt. If you have 2 hours and 48 minutes to spare, Les Misérables is definitely something you can squeeze in at that time slot.

Rock of Ages?

Wow, so the other day I went out and saw Rock of Ages. I expected it to be quite, bad, but not as bad as it was when I saw it. Well...

Oh right! The spoilers. Psht, doesn't matter. Maybe after you read this review you don't want to watch it. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Rock of Ages, a movie-musical-like movie that involves multiple plots. One plot is a girl named Sherrie from a small town in Oklahoma. She ventures on to LA to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. She is robbed first thing by a random man, but acquires a job at the Bourbon, a famous Rock-bar, due to the help of Drew, a man who works at the bar. Meanwhile, the bar owner, Dennis, and his right-handman, Lonny, attempt to pay of taxes they haven't paid in years. Not paying the taxes were threatened by the Los Angeles mayor Mike Whitmore's wife, Patricia. She is a advocate of destroying rock n' roll in the city of Los Angeles. In a church, she voices her decision and reasons that rock n' roll displaces hateful music. While this happens, Sherrie and Drew build up a relationship, but slowly diminishes when Drew becomes the opening act for Stacee Jaxx at the Bourbon. Drew sees that Sherrie just came out of the dressing room with Stacee, but also that Stacee just pulled his pants up. Drew signs to Jaxx's record label, but converts to hip hop music by his manager. Stacee becomes a stripper at a strip club.

I'm not going to reveal the end. I think its just so scattered everywhere.

Now for the review.

I like Julianne Hough, but this movie was just terrible. The plot was scattered around and the acting was quite spotty. It was an awkward movie with random musical outburst at random moments. At some points when you would just expect an outburst of music, nothing happens. It's filled with awkward sex jokes at awkward moments. I just have serious displeasure to this movie.

This is a hard movie to fully veto. Yes I show much displeasure to it, however, it's really a movie that you can like if it is your taste. For me, I do say it's a veto, but you can watch it if you like.

The Lucky One

       The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron, tells the story of a US. Marine Sargent returning from duty in Iraq. Before nearly being blown to bits in Iraq, Sargent Logan Thibault finds a mysterious picture of a women he does not know. Keeping that picture with him, he searches for the owner. Sargent Thibault keeps the photo and survives every near-death experience he faces. After returning home to Colorado, he ponders endlessly about the mysterious picture. It saved his life. He walks all the way to a town in Louisiana, asking for who this picture belongs to. Logan eventually reaches a family kennel in Louisiana. There he finds a women named Beth. Beth mistakenly thinks Logan was applying for a job at the kennel. Logan, helps Beth and her family on many things. Meanwhile, Beth must deal with her ex-husband Keith. Keith and Beth had a son, Ben, who Beth keeps in custody. However, Keith threatens to take Ben in his custody if Beth does something he does not approve of. Eventually, after an argument Ben overhears, he runs away. Keith and Beth follow after him. Logan comes to visit Beth, however does not find her. Beth's grandmother tells Logan that they ran off into the woods for Ben. Due to the heavy rainstorm that night, Ben falls off a wooden bridge, hanging on for his life. Keith dives down to save him. Logan runs by just in time to save Ben from the water, however Keith dies when a tree house falls on him. In the end, they end up in a tugboat down the river in Louisiana together.  

REVIEW

If you watched the movie, you probably noticed my "summary" is pretty vague. 

BUT! The movie was good. I don't understand why so many critics hate this movie so much. Yes, this movie is pretty predictable, but it provides a very romantic, yet occasionally comedic, features. I came out of the the theater happy.

It's better for people who like chick flicks I guess. I really enjoyed the movie though.

The Vow

Today I watched the Vow. It was such a cute movie! What made me feel more interested was that this was based on a true story. So heres my thoughts:

I'm gonna try really hard to try not to get too many spoilers but I might let some slip (sorry if i do).

Channing Tatum and Rachel Mcadams star in this romantic drama showcasing a couple who find themselves in a horrific car accident. Leo(Tatum) eventually recovers from his injuries, however Paige(Mcadams) suffers a severe brain trauma. Her injury caused memory loss, no remembering that Leo was her husband. Paige's parents attempt to bring her back to a life before the marriage to Leo, but Leo interferes. Leo eventually does get a chance to rejuvenate Paige's memories.  

Ok I'm going to stop there, because if i go any further I'm probably gonna ruin the movie for you. 

I really thought this was a good movie. Critics really are not giving it the love it deserves. It was really worth my eight bucks at the theater. I really can't believe this was based on a real story. The crash made me think it was so scary that a person can experience that. Now I'm really, really grateful for the person who invented seat belts. 

I would really give this movie an 8.5/10. It wasn't the best movie ever, but was a solid movie i would recommend to anyone who loves chick flicks. I really don't want to limit this movie to people who love chick flicks because i think it is a good movie to watch for non-chick-flickers. 

Applaud or Veto? 

This section is my opinion of if i recommend the movie or not. I didn't want to do Yay or Nay because i thought it was kind of boring. So Applaud : Yay :: Veto : Nay.

Applaud. It made my eyes watery. It was a really sad movie, but I really liked it. I do think its worth your money (unless you pay thirty bucks just to watch it once).
